    Buckling Restrained Braces: Testing and Future Best Practice

    BRB’s are a new seismic device – installed after the Canterbury Earthquakes. This means there is no evidence of their performance within a full structural system following a major earthquake event. Currently, for a commercial building design to incorporate BRBs it must follow the alternative design process. Where the designer has to prove to a peer reviewer, that the braces will perform as intended. Testing has been limited to uniaxial loading of the specimen only. New computer technology and software development of FEA has enabled us to develop realistic simulations for this application. Also having access to a new research computer cluster has accelerated our ability to iterate through modelling parameters. Dan will discuss the traditional method for incorporating BRBs in a building design and how the FEA strategy he has developed can be used in other building projects to reduce cost.
